Government Grants-Single Parents Pursuing Higher Education Should Search Out Grants by Hughart Pliego
Some people who might benefit the most from a college or university degree are probably also people who consider they are the least likely to have the time, money or energy for it. There are, however, online degree programs – and scholarships that could be applied to them – that might make a college or university degree more of a reality for single parents.
Single parents are certainly not alone within their struggle to make ends meet. There are numerous people these days who find it difficult to survive only on one income; however, you’ll find single parents who struggle to find the time to work to begin with and, when they do, then they need to share that income with a child who needs balanced meals, vitamins and doctor and dental care. These people may perhaps find scholarships depending on financial needs especially suited to their situations.
Grants, like scholarships, are also provided according to financial needs – especially when they’re made available from government agencies. The federal Pell Grant, one of the better known government grants, is made for students with extreme financial needs, and several single parents might be among them. To acquire government grants and scholarships, students typically first complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), that is available online.
Large corporations, professional associations, non-profit foundations and civic and community groups also make scholarships offered to people that have financial needs. Online college and university courses and online degree programs are offered in a number of subjects for those interested in applying their scholarships to flexible programs of study. With Internet access, students participating in online courses and online degree programs obtain coursework and file assignments remotely.
Coursework and assignments in online college and university classes are presented in audio, video and text format, and students can have interaction via message boards and also other technological offerings. Parents in online courses and online degree programs can easily schedule studies for when they’re not working and when the children are asleep or participating in extracurricular activities. Spending money on these college and university pursuits with scholarships helps to make higher education cheaper for these parents, leaving all of them with less debt to settle after graduation.
Information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics demonstrates earnings and job security often increase with the degree of an individual’s education. Knowing that, parents with no college or university degree will dsicover themselves better able to support themselves and their children in instances where they obtain a college or university degree – and particularly in instances where they obtain those degrees with the aid of scholarships or grants.
In addition to speaking with financial aid advisers and department heads at universities and colleges that interest them, single parents might turn to online resources in their search for scholarship assistance. You will find websites that deal with just scholarships that can be accessed with the many recognized search engines. The US Departments of Labor and Education and the non-profit College Board also offer online opportunities to search for scholarships.
A few scholarships might be particularly meant for single parents. Typically, they are accepted by many colleges online. More regularly, they’re designed for particular needs, certain studies as well as for women and minorities who tend to be underrepresented in certain fields. It’s most likely that parents that are looking for scholarships and grants for college will fit into one of these categories. This may help them enhance their lives and the lives of their children.

Parents, Children and the Facts of Life $13.95 Sex education is the duty of the parents, as our Catholic teaching tells us. Yet many parents still struggle to convey the facts of life to their children in a natural and inspiring way. This excellent book will help you fulfill the extremely important duty of training your children to be pure, and eventually to enter marriage with a noble and holy purpose. Applying traditional Catholic principles to very practical questions, Fr. Sattler explains what you as a parent should tell your children, when and how it’s best to tell it, what moral and psychological dangers to avoid, and what questions can be anticipated. The Education of Catholic Girls $16.95 A century after it s first publication, Mother Janet Erskine Stuart s classic The Education of Catholic Girls is back, and it s as relevant and useful as ever! Practical as it is pious, witty as it is wise, this collection of counsels not only helps educators in school or at home meet Catholic girls special intellectual needs, it offers sage strategies for whole-person formation: showing us how to help our girls grow into virtuous Catholic women. Catholic girls among other girls, writes Mother Stuart, and Catholic women among other women, have the privilege as well as the duty of upholding what is highest. The Education of Catholic Girls will help you teach your girls whether through math and science, needlework, Catholic philosophy, or good manners to uphold what is highest; it will help you train them to live a perfectly honorable and fearless life. This centenary edition of The Education of Catholic Girls features English translations of the original s foreign phrases and quoted sources (Mother Stuart s presumption about her readers knowledge of Latin, French, and German points to something education has lost over the years), as well as a new preface by Catholic homeschooling author and speaker Susie Lloyd. |

A Life of Our Lord for Children $14.95 Dear Children: The Gospels are four very short books that tell you about our Lord’s life. You can read them quite fast. The reason the same story takes so much longer to tell in this book is that the men who wrote the Gospels just went straight on and hardly even stopped to explain anything. They couldn’t be expected to know how we would live, and that we would have forgotten how people dressed and spoke and built houses, and the other customs they had in those days. So in this book, I have to stop and explain all the time, but after you’ve read it, the explaining will have been done, and you can start reading the Gospels yourself any time you want. So says the author of this rich retelling of the life of Christ, a tale that possesses the interest, lucidity, and dignity that marks the best of books for children. Marigold Hunt begins with Adam and Eve and goes quickly through the Old Testament to Jesus, whom she presents simply but not trivially, so children encounter Him in His goodness, His suffering, and His majesty. Hunt speaks in words and phrases that young children understand and explains terms they may not know. She includes devotions from the Bible (such as the Magnificat, the Beatitudes, and the Canticle of Zachary ) along with many of Christ’s parables (which she explains). A Life of Our Lord for Children will make sense of Scripture for your children and help them be more attentive during Mass when they hear the same tales directly from the Gospels. The Year and Our Children $19.95 For over half a century, Catholic families have treasured the practical piety and homespun wisdom of Mary Reed Newland’s classic of domestic spirituality, The Year and Our Children. With this new edition, no longer will you have to search for worn, dusty copies to enjoy Newland’s faithful insights, gentle lessons, and delightful stories. They’re all here, and ready to be shared with your family or homeschooling group. Here, too, you’ll find all the prayers, crafts, family activities, litanies, and recipes that will help make your children ever-mindful of the beautiful rhythm of the Church calendar. Learn how to make an Advent wreath — and how to make it more than just a pretty ornament. Teach your children about the real Santa (the one who was a bishop) and how to celebrate all twelve days of Christmas, giving them a holy wonder that will continue long after all the presents have been opened and the wrapping thrown away. When Lent comes, read Newland’s simple secrets to helping your kids embrace their sacrifices with enthusiasm. Then, let her show you how to make your home a place where Holy Week and Easter are duly treated as the highest, holiest days of all the year. She’ll teach you ways to reclaim All Souls’ and All Saints’ from the popular occultism of modern Halloween. She’ll also show you why Church tradition accords special meaning to certain foods, colors, and symbols, and how these add to the incarnational character of Catholic spirituality — allowing children to experience the Faith through sight, smell, touch, and taste. Mary Reed Newland wrote numerous beloved books for Catholic families, but The Year and Our Children is her undisputed masterpiece. Read it, cherish it, share it, put it into practice — and give your kids the gift of a fully lived faith, every day and in every season. Excerpts: How to begin celebrating the Church year with your children How to deal with reluctant family members The Feast of the Holy Innocents and the Blessing of Children The Feast of St. Joseph and vocations Involve your children in Lenten celebrations Holy Saturday, Easter eggs, and poppy-seed cake Mary shrines in the home, and the Angelus The soul and the Feast of the Holy Souls |

How to Raise Good Catholic Children $16.95 First published fifty years ago, How to Raise Good Catholic Children is a rare treat for today’s parents: a wise and readable book on child care that derives its wisdom from the Catholic home rather than from psychologists. Author Mary Reed Newland here draws on her own experiences as the mother of seven to show how the classic Christian principles of sanctity can be translated into terms easily applied to children — even to the very young. Because it’s rooted in experience, not in theory, nothing that Mrs. Newland suggests is impossible or extraordinary. In fact, as you reflect on your experiences with your own children, you’ll quickly agree that hers is an excellent commonsense approach to raising good Catholic children. Let Mrs. Newland show you how to introduce even your littlest ones to God and develop in your growing children virtues such as: The habit of regular prayer Genuine love of the Rosary A sense of the dignity of work Devotion to Mary and the saints A proper love for the things of this world and for the things of Heaven Attentiveness at Mass Love for the Eucharist An understanding and love of purity The ability to make good confessions And dozens of other skills, habits, and virtues that every good Catholic child needs. |
