Children’s books are the best gifts by Brian Shouman
Choosing gifts for your children can take a significant amount of time and energy. Trying to balance their interests with your rules as a parent can make birthdays and other holidays unexpectedly difficult. Although they might not be the flashiest items on Toy store shelves, there is one type of gift that is always welcome by both parents and children. Children’s books are versatile, interesting gifts that will keep their value longer than loud, trendy toys that break within a few weeks. By giving your children books, you are giving them education and entertainment, as well as offering a chance for your children to discover new worlds and exercise their imaginations and creative skills. In addition, books make excellent gifts for nephews and nieces and friends’ children of all ages and reading levels.
Just as with any other gift, you should take each child’s interests and needs into consideration when finding the perfect book. Buying a book that is below your children’s reading level might make them feel disinterested, since children usually like to be challenged a little and know they are reading the same books as their peers. Buying books above the child’s reading level might seem like a good incentive, but if your child cannot engage with the book right away, boredom or frustration might result. The best balance is finding a book that is either right at your child’s reading level or only slightly above it so that the book will be exciting and produce a feeling of accomplishment. The best way to ascertain what level the child is reading at is to look at the books they are currently reading or have recently read. This will give you a good idea of what level at which they are reading. This can also give you an idea of what genres and subjects they are interested in as well.
While it is generally a good idea to expose your children to many books, for a gift, you can show how much you care by selecting a book that matches your child’s current interests. Whether that means a funny science-fiction series or a historical novel, your children will be more likely to love their gifts if they are excited by the subject. They will appreciate your attention to their interests.
Gifting books is also a good way to bond with a child. If you read the same book that you gift to a child, the two of you can discuss the book together. You can critique the story or the actions and decisions of the characters. This can teach children to critically analyze what they read and make connections between ideas in the real world and in the stories they read. They can learn to see things from different perspectives and learn about different cultures as well.
A book is perhaps the best book you can give a child. It can be the gift of a new world or adventure or it can be a window into the life of an important person or historical event. This gift will also reflect well on the giver, showing their taste and their understanding of the child they are buying the book for.

Father Involvement in Childrens Education $124.27 Family involvement has been a key factor in early childhood education for many years. But early childhood educators tend to engage more with mothers than fathers. The study of fathers involvement in childrens development and education has not been given adequate attention in Kenya. This book provides insights on how fathers are useful in enhancing childrens education by getting involved in their educational activities. The book reveals that fathers who engage in their childrens education influence how children perform in school activities. This book was written after a Doctoral research that was conducted on fathers involvement in childrens education in Gucha District Kenya. The author believes that in the present age fathers must strengthen their role as parents to shape their childrens development and learning. Parents, teachers, trainers, policy makers and early childhood experts will find this book useful in encouraging fathers to be actively involved in childrens educational activities. Childrens Work and Opportunities for Education $114.71 Millennium Development Goals, set the global agenda for human development in order to improve the wellbeing of populations, and in doing so, assigned priority to children. When stakes in global economic competition are too high, and when resources are limited, expanding opportunities of future generations becomes all the more crucial for the developing countries. Childrens work, as much as it may carry an economic value, is also a social relation, and this book attempts to show that crosscultural diversity in childrens lives need not prevent identifying and studying the common factors that affect children. The main argument of the book is that focusing attention only on the childs labor market participation provides only a partial understanding of the variety of work children perform and of the conditions under which the right to education continues to be only a dream for many children. This book targets the students interested in development economics, professionals who work with child laborers, and activists who promote schooling in developing countries. List of Childrens Classic Books $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A list of the most important childrens books, which were published at least 90 years ago, and were written for children and/or are still enjoyed by children today. One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights, from the first English language edition (1706), which rendered the title as The Arabian Nights Entertainment. The work as we have it was collected over many centuries by various authors, translators and scholars across the Middle East and North Africa. The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature. In particular, many tales were originally folk stories from the Caliphate era, while others, especially the frame story, are most probably drawn from the Pahlavi Persian work Haz r Afs n which in turn relied partly on Indian elements. Childrens Literature Canon $135.42 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles As with adult literature, the validity of defining a canon of worthy or renowned works in childrens literature is hotly debated. Nevertheless, many books have had enormous impact on publishing history and are still in print today. Due to the didactic nature of much childrens publishing, in which the majority of books are written, published, selected, and taught by adults but consumed by children (Nodelman 1992), the childrens literature canon is extremely powerful in influencing the books actually read. Childrens literature is for readers and listeners up to about age twelve and is often illustrated. The term is used in senses which sometimes exclude youngadult fiction, comic books, or other genres. Books specifically for children existed by the 17th century. Scholarship on childrens literature includes professional organizations, dedicated publications and university courses. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 238 Publication Date: 2010/08/04 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.54 inches |

Parents and Their Childrens Schools $67.85 The role of parents in their childrens education is an issue of critical importance. Many of the changes currently underway in British schools have been justified on the grounds that they provide what parents want. But what do parents really want? And how have they reacted to the changes already introduced in the UK, such as increased parental choice, the National Curriculum, and standardized assessment? Parents and Their Childrens Schools is the first book to tackle this important issue in depth and will be important reading for all those involved in education. It presents the findings of a unique research study which looked directly at these questions. The study followed 150 children through Key Stage One (57 years) of the National Curriculum, culminating in the first standardized assessments of 7 year olds ever to take place in the UK. The book presents the views of their parents and teachers, obtained through regular indepth interviews at crucial stages during this period. As such, it provides important insights into the changes currently underway in schools and their effects on parents. In a broader context, it makes a major contribution to our understanding of the fundamental relationship between parents and schools. The author reviews recent work which aims to counter prejudice in childrens literature and traces the historical and theoretical basis of this work. Equality issues and stereotyping in a wide range of books old and new, popular and classic are also discussed. The focus throughout the text is on the practical ways in which teachers and librarians can help children to develop an awareness of bias, so that they are less likely to adopt the prejudices consciously or subconsciously expressed by the authors they experience. Childrens Explanations: A Psycholinguistic Study $70.1 How and when does the ability to give and understand explanations develop? Morag Donaldson directly addresses this question in the present study, providing evidence from a series of imaginative experiments she carried out with 3 to 10yearolds. In contrast to many earlier accounts, she demonstrates that children can distinguish between cause and effect and among physical, psychological and logical relations well before the age of 7. The study focuses primarily on the linguistic abilities that are needed for explanation, in particular the understanding of because, so, why?, and how do you know?, and it makes a substantial contribution to our understanding of the semantics and pragmatics of causal connectives. However, the study also provides valuable insights into childrens related cognitive abilities. Childrens Explanations is a book that will be of equal interest to cognitive and developmental psychologists and to psycholinguistics, as well as to researchers in education for whom its topic must be of crucial importance. Childrens Language Ability $167.53 Research on childrens language impairments has provided valuable insights into the factors that are important for normal language acquisition. In particular, research on Specific Language Impairment has investigated dysfunction in cognitive, perceptual, social, environmental and developmental areas that impact on normal language development. Until recently however, many of these factors have been investigated in isolation in clinical samples. Therefore, despite suggestions that the factors are important for normal language acquisition this hasnt been fully investigated in a normal sample of children. This book provides a multitheoretical and multifaceted approach to investigating language ability that incorporates the main factors of importance in child language. Structural models are developed and analysed with a view to predicting which factors are related and most important in language development in a nonclinical group of children. The analysis summarises and synthesises current child language research and should be especially useful to child language researchers and professionals in the psychology, speech pathology, education and child development fields. Bilingual Childrens Metalinguistic Awareness $134.33 Although some studies claim that all bilingual children attain metalinguistic awareness (MLA) earlier than monolinguals, others suggest that such an advantage does not occur, or is only found for balanced bilinguals, or on certain types of tasks. However, the majority of these studies investigated bilingual children who spoke typologically related languages, and with tests administered in only one of the two languages. Therefore, this book examines whether relative language typology or language of testing affects the bilingual advantage in MLA.The book critically reviewed and compared studies that investigated MLA in monolinguals and bilinguals. Then it empirically tested the MLA of young English monolinguals and ArabicEnglish bilinguals. The analysis should broaden our understanding of how bilingualism may affect young childrens MLA in two dissimilar languages This book is useful for educators in bilingual education, and researchers who want to replicate the findings with other subjects speaking typologically dissimilar languages. Childrens Literature in Malaysian Primary Schools $181.62 The Contemporary Childrens Literature Program (CCL) was introduced into English classes in Malaysian primary schools in 2003 with the aim of improving English language teaching through the introduction of storybooks or childrens literature. A study was done to examine issues in the implementation of the CCL program in three primary schools in the city of Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. Findings revealed that the various stakeholders had positive views about the program. However, there were reservations about the extent and speed in which the program was being implemented. Apart from that, problems were also identified with the cascade model of training used to prepare teachers for the implementation of the program. Issues regarding program monitoring, the absence of studentcentred learning, and limited number of books and delays in the deliverance of books created management problems for the schools. Nevertheless, this is characteristic of new programmes which have yet to be fully developed and the main benefit of introducing childrens literature in ESL classrooms will definitely outweigh all these initial shortcomings. Childrens Cognitive Performance in Catm Test $164.1 This is a personal book, written to the readers and persons interested in Child Development and more so those interested in cognitive development in childrens education. The author focuses on the Relationship between Preschool Childrens Cognitive Performance and Their Teachers Verbal Behaviour. Many educational programmes have identified cognitive development as a priority domain at all levels of education. Hence, there is great value placed on good academic performance in Kenya too. Poor performance becomes a major concern to teachers, parents and educationists. Early childhood cognitive development is very important in every individual; what children experience makes a foundation for future learning. Teachers influence is not the only factor that influences cognitive development, other factors at home and outdoor play activities are also said to contribute. However, teachers may not be aware of the impact of their verbal behaviours in classroom. Findings in this research will increase understanding on how to improve children cognitive development through positive teachers verbal behaviour. Any observation and comments will be highly appreciated. Role of Parents in Childrens Academic Achievement $154.53 The relationship between intellectual ability and academic achievement is well established in the scientific literature. According to Vygotsky (1978), however, the path between a childs cognitive ability and their academic achievement is influenced by the important people in their lives. This book presents a research, which tested directly the controversial idea that parents play a crucial role in influencing their childrens academic achievement because of the way that parents communicate their sociocultural values and practices. Evidence is demonstrated using an approach that employs both advance statistical methods including structural equation modelling and case profiles from interviews of parents and their children. In the light of the findings presented in this book, parents are encouraged to maximise their childrens academic achievement through the creation of a mediation structure that directly communicates their beliefs and academic expectations. This long overdue book is useful for all students and researchers from the broad area of education and psychology, and most of all, for parents who care. Parental Attitudes and Childrens Sharing Behavior $93.99 Parents are always trying to influence what their child becomes. One way to study that is to examine what aspects of parental behavior and attitude are related to the childs behavior. The current study examined the relationship of the following variables with young childrens prosocial behavior: age, sibling status, family income, and parental education, parental altruistic behavior, parental affiliative tendency, and parental socialization goals. The family experience variables were collected using The Family Experiences Questionnaire which was adapted from the work of Keller (2007), Mehrabian (1972), and Smith (2005). Childrens prosocial behavior was assessed through a series of inlab sharing tasks, involving lowcost sharing, in which the child could give just one item out of a group of items to share with a distressed adult who had nothing to play with. The results show that there are multiple familybased correlates of early prosocial behavior and that those vary by the childs age and what must be shared. A Well-Tempered Mind: Using Music to Help Kids Listen and Learn $0.4 Peter Perret, conductor of the Winston-Salem Symphony, chronicles in A Well-Tempered Mind how a brief NPR feature about music and the brain inspired him to create an innovative music education program for first- through third-graders at two elementary schools in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The musicians from his woodwind quintet taught the children to listen to music, detect the roles of the instruments, discern how music is constructed, and even compose their own music. The effects of the quintets intervention reached beyond the music classes and carried into other academic subjects as well, resulting in a significant improvement in the childrens scores on annual state tests. A Well-Tempered Mind describes how the children and musicians worked together, and explores the brain research that seeks to understand how music engages the brains cognitive capabilities ranging from memory and language and emotional processing.Perrets Bolton project inspires a host of tantalizing questions such as: Does music physically change the brain? Can music help kids with short attention spans, dyslexia, and other learning difficulties? Does music influence the cognitive abilities needed for reading and math? Perrets engaging and candid narrative, previously featured in Symphony Magazine, tells of a fascinating journey of discovery into the complexities and intricate workings of the human brain. Further, it opens the door to new and exciting opportunities for education, in its demonstration of how music can be a universal language that expands young minds in unforeseen ways.A Well-Tempered Mind demonstrates that by working together, we can make a difference in our children’s lives and replace cultural bankruptcy with a full pocket of good music.  Lord knows we need it.”—Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln CenterThis book should persuade parents and administrators to give education in music its deserved high |

All Families Are Different $13.98 Gordon writes in a simple, straightforward, and helpful manner. Children relate to this approach well.” -Redbook”Gordon is an exceptional guide.” -Parenting MagazineIs there such a thing as a “normal” family? Is one family better than another? Of course the answer to these questions is no, but children are often led to believe otherwise. Young people need to understand and appreciate that when it comes to families, they are all different! One of the world’s most influential and loved authors of educational children’s books, Dr. Sol Gordon has created an uplifting book for young people age four and older who are curious about just what it means to be part of a family. Some children, he explains, live with both parents, while others live with one or with step- or foster parents. Nowadays, we also find children being reared by aunts, uncles, or grandparents, as well as same-sex couples. The variety of possibilities is rich in its diversity. Separations, divorce, abuse, neglect, and sibling rivalries are an unfortunate part of life, but, Gordon emphasizes, they are not the child’s fault. While the many illustrations show a variety of family situations to stimulate awareness and acceptance, the text places importance on children knowing they are loved by their family members-whomever they may be-and that no one’s family is perfect. But children can play a very special and important role in making their home a happier one: “It’s up to you to be the best person you can be and doing well in school will help you to be a better adult, or parent, when you grow up,” Gordon says.Sol Gordon, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist with a special interest in children’s education, is the author of Did the Sun Shine Before You Were Born?; Girls Are Girls, and Boys Are Boys; A Better Safe Than Sorry Book, and many other books for childrens and adults. Ages 4 and up. |

Awakening Children’s Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference $22.99 Parents and teachers today face a swirl of conflicting theories about child rearing and educational practice. Indeed, current guides are contradictory, oversimplified, and at odds with current scientific knowledge. Now, in Awakening Children’s Minds, Laura Berk cuts through the confusion of competing theories, offering a new way of thinking about the roles of parents and teachers and how they can make a difference in children’s lives. This is the first book to bring to a general audience, in lucid prose richly laced with examples, truly state-of-the-art thinking about child rearing and early education. Berk’s central message is that parents and teachers contribute profoundly to the development of competent, caring, well-adjusted children. In particular, she argues that adult-child communication in shared activities is the wellspring of psychological development. These dialogues enhance language skills, reasoning ability, problem-solving strategies, the capacity to bring action under the control of thought, and the child’s cultural and moral values. Berk explains how children weave the voices of more expert cultural members into dialogues with themselves. When puzzling, difficult, or stressful circumstances arise, children call on this private speech to guide and control their thinking and behavior. In addition to providing clear roles for parents and teachers, Berk also offers concrete suggestions for creating and evaluating quality educational environments–at home, in child care, in preschool, and in primary school–and addresses the unique challenges of helping children with special needs. Parents, Berk writes, need a consistent way of thinking about their role in children’s lives, one that can guide them in making effective child-rearing decisions. Awakening Children’s Minds gives us the basic guidance we need to raise caring, thoughtful, intelligent children. |

Children’s Moral Emotions and Moral Cognition: Developmental and Educational Perspectives $29 Children’s emerging morality involves the development of moral emotions and moral cognition. Developmental research suggests that emotions play an important role in dealing with moral conflict situations, and they help children differentiate moral concepts from other social judgments. However, emotions and their role in moral cognition and moral behavior have yet to be addresses systematically in empirical research. In this volume, the authors show how integrative developmental research on children’s moral emotions and moral cognition can help us understand how children’s morality evolves. As both moral emotions and moral cognition are related to children’s moral, prosocial behavior, as well as to their immoral, aggressive behavior, studying how moral emotions and moral cognition interact is not only of conceptual significance to developmental researchers, but also of practical importance to educators. A central premise of the volume is that moral emotions interact with moral cognition in different ways across development. An integrative developmental perspective on moral emotions and moral cognition thus offers an important conceptual framework for understanding children’s emerging morality and designing developmentally sensitive moral intervention strategies. The authors summarize the empirical literature linking moral emotions to moral cognition and discuss promising conceptual avenues and methodological approaches to study children’s moral emotions and moral cognition. They also provide examples illustrating how the principles of integrative moral education can be applied in educational practice. This is the 129th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. The mission of New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in the field of child and adolescent development.
