There Are Plenty of Resources in Perth, Sydney and Newcastle for Educational Trips
Schools frequently use educational trips to supplement classroom work for children of all ages and there are plenty of resources available in Australia’s cities to provide an educational day or longer.
A bus charter in Sydney will put classes within reach of the many educational facilities including Sydney Harbour, the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Opera House. All three offer a variety of educational programmes.
The Botanical Gardens offers a number of themed environments including Tropical Lowlands, Montane and Australian Rainforest housed in the Tropical Centre. There are also the First Encounters Garden, Herb Garden, Rare and Threatened Garden and the Heritage Palm Grove.
The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, is the native garden of the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust and includes various lakes and plus the open Cumberland Plain and woodland for studying and exploring habitats as well as Teaching bush awareness. Further afield is the Trust’s The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden a venue surrounded by the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.
The Opera House also hosts educational programmes for schools at both primary and secondary level and the Harbour Trust offers excursions to Curriculum-aligned excursions to Cockatoo Island, Australia’s most unusual urban park in the middle of Sydney Harbour and to North Head Sanctuary, located in the former School of Artillery near Manly.
Newcastle, also in New South Wales, offers a different kind of experience and is also accessible for classes using

. In addition to its beaches and coastal walks the city is home to perhaps the highest concentration of artists among its population making it a good place for a study of both current, regional and indigenous art. History is the focus for a visit to the Fort Scratchley Historic Site located just on Nobby’s Beach near the city of Newcastle.
Over on the West Coast in the state of Western Australia, one of Perth’s most popular attractions for study trips via bus charter in Perth is the Zoo, which is home to several endangered species. Further afield schools can use bus charter from Perth to access the rolling hills and valleys, wineries and orchards and the natural Australian bushland to learn the skill of bushwalking.
A coach or bus charter from a reputable company can make it possible for school staff to organise educational trips with the confidence that the company is aware of all occupational health and safety issues, and risk assessments required to keep children safe and happy when they are away on excursions from their school base.

”There’s some good karma up in here”: A case study of white school leadership in an urban context. $49.99 As educators work to improve achievement within the current policy environment of accountability and “subgroups,” their attention has been drawn to considerations of race, culture, and learning in schools. Yet few school leaders have the preparation or knowledge to assist teacher learning about these issues.;Theories of culturally relevant pedagogy focus on how teachers can teach subject matter in a culturally appropriate manner, and previous scholarship has considered culturally relevant pedagogy in relation to teaching and learning. This inquiry examines it in relation to leadership content knowledge. Critical race theory offers a lens through which to examine the relationship of beliefs and knowledge when considering race and racism in the American educational system and for further situating an examination of school leadership and cultural competency.;The research questions I address are: (1) What kind of perspective toward students is held by educators in the school? How do these perspectives connect with teaching, learning, and leadership? (2) How is culturally relevant pedagogy represented in the schools? How do school leaders foster or hinder CRP in their schools? (3) In which contexts and events in the practice of school leadership do issues of race, culture, and learning surface? How are the issues mediated by the principal and other school leaders?;This case study of three White principals reveals that they faced many issues of race, culture, and learning, yet tended to be colorblind and colormute. Several White teachers held dynamic and nuanced asset perspectives toward children of color. A community intervention strategy to increase immigrant youth resilience. $49.99 In institutions of higher learning across Arizona, undocumented students often go unnoticed. Many of these students were brought into the U.S. as young children and many have graduated from Arizona high schools. Arizona’s Proposition 300, implemented in 2007, has impacted undocumented students by denying them state sponsored financial aid and in-state classification for tuition. This has resulted in a growing concern as to how undocumented students and college staff are going to deal with this mandate. In this study, the following two research questions were developed to investigate this issue: (1) How will this mandate impact undocumented students’ lives?; and, (2) What are the obstacles these individuals will face when they can no longer afford a higher education? Using an action research approach, a website was created to provide the undocumented students as well as the community information about Proposition 300, college access and resources available. Data were collected through administration web statistics, a 42 question survey, blog postings and follow-up interviews. The website was open to any interne user, which allowed people from various geographic locations to participate. Quantitative analyses gathered from website statistics indicated significant activity from participants. The total number of website visits from participants was 752, viewing 3,310 total pages and averaging 6:44 minutes per visit. Participants visited the website from various locations throughout the U.S. and from Mexico and Puerto Rico. Of the participants (n = 299), many indicated they were female, students and Hispanic. Most participants found the website useful and confirmed high resilience characteristics and, due to the website, felt optimistic about their educational future. Qualitative analyses gathered from survey data (n = 299) and blog postings (n = 64), indicated that the greatest concern of undocumented students was that they could not afford the increase in |

A training program for special education teachers: Systemic classroom interventions designed to reduce sensory symptoms in children in special education classrooms. $49.99 Sensory deficits coexist with other behavioral, emotional, and physical conditions in young children who meet criteria for special education services in the public schools. Literature suggests that sensory deficits may contribute to some of the problematic behaviors children display; however, there are few resources available to assist teachers in providing an environmentally appropriate educational setting for these children. This dissertation reviews the literature relating to sensory deficits and existing interventions. It also develops and structures an appropriate training program for special education teachers. Teacher training consists of 4 separate modules occurring on 4 separate occasions. The first module orients teachers to sensory issues in young children, and the second module focuses on environmental interventions and the use of materials readily available in their classrooms. Finally, the third and fourth modules concentrate on approaches to working with challenging children. It is hypothesized that an appropriate school structure will assist in decreasing behavioral symptoms due to sensory deficits. In addition, a fifth module targeting school administrators focuses on the assessment of sensory deficits, the importance of identifying these deficits, and approaches to working with these deficits outside of the classroom. |

African American kinship caregivers’ experiences with parenting and their children’s schools: An exploratory study. $49.99 An exploratory study was completed to examine African American kinship caregivers’ experiences with parenting and their children’s schools. A qualitative analysis of ten interviews was completed using the grounded theory approach (Strauss & Corbin, 1997) and case study method (Yin, 2004). In 2000, the national census recorded that an estimated six million children lived in homes led by grandparents or other relatives (Reynolds, 2003). Increases in teen parenting, abuse and neglect, mental illness, incompetence, incarceration, drug and alcohol abuse, and premature death often attributed to HIV and AIDS, have enlarged the number of children requiring out of home placement. Federal and state legislation and related funding streams mandate giving adult relatives preference over other non-related caregivers when determining child placement. Though some kinship caregivers are licensed as foster or adoptive parents and are expected to meet the same rigorous screening and training requirements as non-relative caregivers, the vast majority of children are placed with relatives through private family arrangements (Swann & Sylvester, 2006). Whether placements are facilitated by family courts, social service agencies, or by familial agreements, children’s and caregivers’ financial, psychological, emotional, health and educational needs evolve over time. This study revealed three issues which affected the level of aid afforded to these families. First, the level of financial and other parenting support given to kinship caregivers is often tied directly to the route of the child’s placement. Second, relative caregivers who have accepted responsibility for kin children with little or no contact with the family courts or social service agencies demonstrated limited knowledge of and/or access to helpful resources. Third, consistent with the literature generated in studying grandparent caregivers, most kinship caregivers in this small sample were reluctant to seek social and |

An intervention study of primary age gifted students with strong nonverbal abilities from low income and culturally diverse backgrounds. $49.99 The prevalence of high nonverbal reasoning strength among children from low income, culturally diverse backgrounds challenges the education community to provide effective instruction for these students (Briggs et al., 2008; Koshy & Robinson, 2006; Olszewski-Kubilius, 2007; Robinson et al., 1997; VanTassel-Baska, 2003b; VanTassel-Baska, Feng, & Evans, 2007). Research on the well-being and progress of young gifted students confirms that stimulating material resources, association with intellectual peers, and formal educational interventions designed to optimize students’ strengths improves the educational outlook for these students (Bittker, 1991; Campbell et al., 2001; Clasen, 2006; Corno et al., 2002; Morelock & Morrison, 1999; Ramey & Ramey, 2004; Robinson et al., 1997; Sarouphim, 1999; VanTassel-Baska, 2006; VanTassel-Baska et al., 2002; VanTassel-Baska, 2007). In this study, a Vygotskian perspective provided the framework for an instructional intervention (Vygotsky 1978 version, 1986 version, 1994 version). Consistent with the perspective, the intervention included intellectual scaffolding to support conscious thought and formal learning in science, and encouragement of individual learning in the zone of proximal development. The researcher undertook this study to determine if the use of instructional strategies capitalizing on nonverbal reasoning strength would improve achievement in science learning with a William and Mary life sciences curriculum unit. A six week, 24 hour program in a southeastern Virginia urban district provided the venue for the study. Second graders from Title I schools who scored above the 80th percentile on the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) nonverbal battery and significantly lower on verbal and quantitative batteries qualified for the program. Twenty-three students participated, resulting in a treatment group of 13 students and a comparison group of 10 students. The nature of the intervention was a William and Mary Life Sciences unit |

Bridging cultures: American Indian students at the Northfield Mount Hermon School. $49.99 University of New Hampshire, May, 2009 In 1879, two very different types of boarding schools opened their doors: the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, headed by Army Captain Richard Henry Pratt, and the Northfield Seminary for Young Ladies, founded by evangelist D. L. Moody. While Captain Pratt was dedicated to the assimilation and acculturation of Native children into the dominant culture, D. L. Moody was determined to offer affordable education to financially disadvantaged young women. In the fall of 1880 the Seminary welcomed sixteen Choctaw, Cherokee, and Creek students, and, in 1881, the newly opened Mount Hermon Boys’ School accepted four Native American young men. Thus began an educational relationship with Indian Country that has survived for 130 years. This study begins with an overview of the history of American Indian education, followed by a discussion of the life of D. L. Moody, emphasizing his educational goals, then draws upon the narratives of American Indian and Alaskan Native students to argue that the egalitarian and supportive environment of the Northfield Schools provided the tools that helped attendees to bridge Native and mainstream cultures, rather than trapping them between the two. Using archival resources and interviews, this work personalizes the experiences of a few young men and women who attended Moody’s schools. Moreover, this study begins the exploration into the under-researched area of private boarding schools as an alternative to the federally supported system. |

Cerebral Palsy: A Complete Guide for Caregiving $19.95 When a child has a health problem, parents want answers. But when a child has cerebral palsy, the answers don’t come quickly. A diagnosis of this complex group of chronic conditions affecting movement and coordination is difficult to make and is typically delayed until the child is eighteen months old. Although the condition may be mild or severe, even general predictions about long-term prognosis seldom come before the child’s second birthday. Written by a team of experts associated with the Cerebral Palsy Program at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, this authoritative resource provides parents and families with vital information that can help them cope with uncertainty. Thoroughly updated and revised to incorporate the latest medical advances, the second edition is a comprehensive guide to cerebral palsy. The book is organized into three parts. In the first, the authors describe specific patterns of involvement (hemiplegia, diplegia, quadriplegia), explain the medical and psychosocial implications of these conditions, and tell parents how to be effective advocates for their child. In the second part, the authors provide a wealth of practical advice about caregiving from nutrition to mobility. Part three features an extensive alphabetically arranged encyclopedia that defines and describes medical terms and diagnoses, medical and surgical procedures, and orthopedic and other assistive devices. Also included are lists of resources and recommended reading. Praise for the first edition of Cerebral Palsy: Addresses the many complexities and uncertainties related to this diagnosis. At the same time, it provides the information parents, grandparents, caregivers, and health professionals need — everything from medical, educational, and psychosocial implications to wheelchair maintenance and dental care. — Exceptional Parent |
