Writing Children’s Books For Dummies $11.99 Everyone loves a children’s book. And many dream about writing one. But is it actually possible for an unpublished writer—armed with a good story idea and a love of kids—to write, sell, publish, and promote a book? Yes, it is! Veteran children’s book publishing executive and author Lisa Rojany Buccieri and author Peter Economy show you how, in their incredibly useful 2005 first edition of Writing Children’s Books For Dummies® . Buccieri and Economy begin by explaining the basics of the children’s book business, from the nuts and bolts of the various formats and genres—with helpful illustrations to aid you—to the intricacies of the book publishing market, a list of recent award-winning books, and a first peek into the particular mind set that writing children’s books requires. (Hint: Throw out the adult rules, and think like a kid!) Then the authors dive into the actual writing process itself, with tips on setting up a workspace, brainstorming great book ideas, researching the subject you decide on, even speaking with the sorts of kids you hope will eventually read the book. They show you how to create compelling characters and develop them in the manuscript; how to outline and write a plot "arc" of conflict, change, and resolution; how to master the difficult art of writing dialogue; and how to use active (rather than passive) language to keep your story moving along and interesting to young minds. Or, if you’re planning to write a creative nonfiction children’s book—on a topic such as science, nature, or a historical figure, for example—the authors include a chapter on this, too. Ready, set, go… it’s time to sit down and write! Once you’ve finished your book, however, the process has only begun. Now you will refine, submit, and hopefully sell your manuscript. Here again, the authors of Writing Children’s Books For Dummies come through for you. They deliver solid advice on hiring an illustrator—or not; participating in workshops and conferences to learn the business and hone a story; finding an agent; and, finally, submitting the manuscript to publishers and—if you are successful—signing a contract. Along the way, the authors also include tips on handling rejection; a quick primer on the various editors in publishing houses (and how they work to make your book its best); and making a plan to publicize the book, including hiring a publicist if necessary. Like all For Dummies ® books, Writing Children’s Books For Dummies highlights "The Part of Tens," which includes the Ten Best Ways to Promote Your Story and More Than Ten Great Sources for Storylines. And the ever-helpful Cheat Sheet includes Tips for Editing your Children’s Book Manuscript, Children’s Book No-No’s, Twelve Commandments for Writing Younger Children’s Books, and Tips on Promotion. From setting down that first word on paper to doing a successf |

The Joy of Children’s Literature $57.28 The Joy of Children’s Literature provides in-depth coverage of children’s literature with integrated reading methods in a concise, accessible format. The compact length allows for more time during the course to read the numerous children’s books highlighted in the text. Johnson emphasizes that reading, writing, discussing, and finding pleasure in children’s books are essential to the ability to recognize and recommend literature, and ultimately, to the ability to share the joy of children’s literature with children themselves. The text is divided into three main parts. Part I introduces foundational concepts necessary to the study of children’s literature, including child development and the history and scope of children’s literature. Part II, the primary focus of the text, analyzes a different literary genre in each chapter, providing a history of the genre, a consideration of its role in modern children’s literature, key books in the genre, and discussion topics to encourage involvement with the material. Part III considers the usage of children’s literature in the classroom, with practical advice for teaching. Many features in this text specifically incorporate the Cengage Learning Education Mission Statement: to provide quality content to student teachers and help them bridge the gap from preservice to practice, fostering lifelong career success. Among these features are A Closer Look, special reference charts for teachers, Activities for Professional Development, Creating Your Classroom Library, and the two chapters on teaching which close the book. |

Just Mary: The Life of Mary Evelyn Grannan $35 Just Mary and Maggie Muggins are names that will arouse memories in those who grew up with CBC radio and television in the 1940s and 1950s. The creator of these and other children’s shows, former Fredericton schoolteacher Mary Grannan, became a radio star when she hit the national airwaves in 1939, her popularity peaking when Maggie Muggins moved to television in 1955. Long before The Friendly Giant and Mr. Dressup appeared, her work helped to shape the legacy of gentle children’s programming on CBC. Building on her broadcasting success, Grannan published over thirty books, most runaway best-sellers. Attired in stylish dress, extravagant hats, and enormous earrings, she made frequent guest appearances at public events across the country. She received the Beaver Award for her broadcasting and was honoured by the International Mark Twain Society and the Institute for Education by Radio at Ohio State University. “Just Mary”: The Life of Mary Evelyn Grannan is the first biography of this creative and once well-known Canadian woman. Immersing the reader in rich detail while showcasing excerpts of her writings through the years, the book presents an intimate examination of her life journey through previously unreleased personal letters, archives, an abundance of photographs, and interviews with family, friends, colleagues, and former students. SUS, the latest Unified Script $62.99 Shorttitle “SUS” (Sarma’s Unified Script), invented in November 2009 is the latest Unified Script. Unified Script is the dream script of the experts, through which they believe, inventors in which the specially designed scripts can substitute the alphabet of any language in chronological order. The scripts are written by using minimum number of strokes (mostly 4), these are ‘self-generating’ (such that children themselves can recreate those by following some principles) and create absolutely no change in the speaking sound or style of the language. The scripts are so easy to identify and write that it is possible for the children to learn within 25%-50% of that required for the traditional script. This may save huge time, resources and energy now required in children’s education. “SUS” can be used as second or alternate script of any language. Programs can be made for substituting the traditional scripts of any language by SUS scripts just by pressing a key. Using one script in writing many languages may be highly advantageous for the internet / mobile communications and the printing industries. |

PHYSICAL EDUCATION, CONTINUED. School Lots. It would be unreasonable to expect, that all the following suggestions on the subject of school lots and schoolhouses, however much they may be approved, will be universally, or even generally, carried into effect. In many instances, poverty will be pleaded as the excuse. But this cannot be an available plea. For, where the district is poor, the land is generally of trifling value ; and, as to the slight difference of expense between a good and a wretched schoolhouse, it certainly is not to be put in competition ‘ with the health of the children. Leaving entirely out of view the intellectual and moral evils connected with the inferior building, true economy would dictate the erection of a good structure, sufficiently spacious for the evolutions of the school and the health of its inmates. Our duty, however, is in no wise altered by this circumstance. If only a few school lots be arranged, a/eic schoolhouses be constructed, in a better taste than formerly, our design will be, in a great measure, accomplished. For the constant tendency of mankind is towards improvement. We never go backward. And it requires only a few good models, scattered through the country, to bring about, in a very short time, a manifest change for the better, every where. School lots should always be in a pleasant and healthful situation, and never less than half an acre in extent. The public road is, surely, a very improper, in fact, dangerous, place, for large groups of children at play ; and yet, if there be no ground attached to the schoolhouse, they must either use that, or trespass on the neighboring property,—a temptation to which we should be careful not to expose our youth, especially at school, where every evil influence should |

Excerpt: Raine’s Foundation School – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It is situated in the north of Bethnal Green, just to the east of Cambridge Heath Road (A107) and half a mile south of the Regent’s Canal and not far from the Cambridge Heath railway station. It is opposite the London Chest Hospital, just off the Old Ford Road (B118) and in the parish of St James-the-Less church. It is one of six schools in the borough that has a sixth form. Henry Raine had made a good sum of money from selling alcohol. However he was a devout Christian, and he knew that he should use his wealth for good. He decided to found a school where poor children could get a free education. He built it in Wapping, where he lived and named it “the Lower School”.It opened in 1719. “The Lower School”, was designed to provide an education for fifty boys and fifty girls between the ages of 8 and 18 years. They would learn “the three Rs”, which were reading, writing and arithmetic. Girls however were also taught to sew and to cook, and Boys were also made to shovel coal underground for the school’s heating, and to scrub the floors. This was done in between periods. In 1736 Henry built and set aside money for a boarding school which would take on forty girls from the Lower School. It was known as “Raine’s Hospital” and later “Asylum”(this did not have the connotations it has today). It would have been quite pleasant, with clothes being provided along with frequent meals. The boys and the girls were separated at first and the boys would be beaten if caught talking to a girl. Because of this a fence was put up between the boarding and lower school. In 1820 a new boys school was opened as there was a large increase in boys at the lower school which was only a boys’ school, the girls ha… More: |

Chapters: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Statistical Accounts of Scotland, an Essay on the Life and Genius of Samuel Johnson, Aenesidemus, 1792 in Literature. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects (1792), written by the eighteenth-century British feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, is one of the earliest works of feminist philosophy. In it, Wollstonecraft responds to those educational and political theorists of the eighteenth century who did not believe women should have an education. She argues that women ought to have an education commensurate with their position in society, claiming that women are essential to the nation because they educate its children and because they could be “companions” to their husbands, rather than mere wives. Instead of viewing women as ornaments to society or property to be traded in marriage, Wollstonecraft maintains that they are human beings deserving of the same fundamental rights as men. Wollstonecraft was prompted to write the Rights of Woman after reading Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord’s 1791 report to the French National Assembly, which stated that women should only receive a domestic education; she used her commentary on this specific event to launch a broad attack against sexual double standards and to indict men for encouraging women to indulge in excessive emotion. Wollstonecraft wrote the Rights of Woman hurriedly in order to respond directly to ongoing events; she intended to write a more thoughtful second volume, but she died before completing it. While Wollstonecraft does call for equality between the sexes in particular areas of life, such as morality, she does not explicitly state that men and women are equal. Her ambiguous |

A Bad Beginning and The Path to Islam $12.92 Now in his 80s, Gai Eaton describes how, after a strange childhood completely isolated from other children, followed by a Cambridge education and life as an actor and later as a diplomat, circumstances led him at the age of 30 to Islam. Fascinated by the vagaries of human behavior and the strangeness of human destinies, he has observed the human scene with a novelist”s eye and traced the profound changes in attitudes and tastes which have taken place in a single lifetime. He recounts his youthful adventures with the clear-sight and understanding only possible for someone whom age has freed from the passions which once possessed him. What makes this work unique is the juxtaposition of hindsight with diary entries made at the time, which gives a quality of immediacy to a true story that includes reminiscences of the diplomatic life and an outline of the Sufi path. |

A Bad Beginning: The Path to Islam $12.48 Now in his 80s, Gai Eaton describes how, after a strange childhood completely isolated from other children, followed by a Cambridge education and life as an actor and later as a diplomat, circumstances led him at the age of 30 to Islam.Fascinated by the vagaries of human behavior and the strangeness of human destinies, he has observed the human scene with a novelist’s eye and traced the profound changes in attitudes and tastes which have taken place in a single lifetime. |

A Band of Angels By Deborah Hopkinson, Illustrated by Raul Colon $7.99 <P><i>A Band of Angels</i> is fiction, but it is based on real events and people. The character of Ella was inspired by Ella Sheppard Moore, who was born February 4, 1851, in Nashville, Tennessee. Her father was able to free himself and young Ella from slavery, but before he could buy freedom for Ella’s mother she was sold away. Ella was raised in Cincinnati, where she took music lessons. At fifteen, she was left penniless when her father died. She arrived at Fisk School in 1868 with only six dollars.<P>Fisk was opened in 1866 as a school for former slaves and began offering college classes in 1871. That year, in a desperate attempt to save Fisk from closing, a music teacher named George White set out with a group of students on a singing tour to raise money. Although at first they only sang popular music of the day, they soon became famous for introducing spirituals to the world.<P>Ella Sheppard was the pianist for the Jubilee Singers on their historic concert tours, which raised enough money to save the school and build Jubilee Hall, the first permanent structure in the South for the education of black students. Ella later married George Moore, had three children, and located her mother and a sister. She died in 1914. Today her great-granddaughter is a librarian at Fisk University who shares the history of the Jubilee Singers with visitors.<P>Although none graduated from Fisk, the original Jubilee Singers were recognized with honorary degrees in 1978. Today, Jubilee Singers at Fisk University continue to keep alive a rich musical tradition that includes such songs as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Many Thousand Gone,” and “Go Down, Moses.” |
